Butcher Block Stand
Here’s the first thing I made for the new house. The top is just a pre-finished maple butcher block I bought at the lumber yard. The base is cherry.
I finished it with three coats of Tried and True Varnish Oil (boiled linseed oil and resin (tree sap)). In the past I’ve mixed my own rub-on finish, but from now on, I’m sticking with Tried and True. It comes out of the can a little thick, about like honey, but once it warms up (I poured some into a jar and let it sit in the sun for a while), it’s easy to work, forgiving of fingerprints and smudges, cleans up easily, and buffs nicely. Since it doesn’t contain driers it’s completely food safe. The lack of driers means it does not dry quickly, however.
Altogether, top, wheels, and stand are 30 inches high, the height of our kitchen counter tops. The top is 25 inches wide and 18 inches deep. The drawer is 18″ x 12″ x 5″.

With project Number One out of the way, I’m moving on to the dining room table. After that I’ll modify the current, too small dining room table into a coffee table, then build a new headboard, then nightstands, a sideboard for the diningroom, shelves for the den (probably like these), a low, narrow console for the TV and etc, a corner storage bin/table (also for the den), and, … that’s it.
